The “pits” are the central experience of the museum and positioned in relation to the basalt precipice on the site. They keep the importance of the ground as a source of the prehistoric science present. The use of these “pits” in a prehistory museum is unprecedented. It is only possible at this extraordinary location, where the ground contains this important geological information. They are on the same height and through the changing of the terrain, differentiated spaces appear and the visitors are gently let into the ground. Consequently each exhibition “pit” has its own character; they are connected under ground by two additional rooms, which provide additional, intimate spaces for exhibition.
