One axis: the basalt precipice
In order to connect the underneath and the top of the site and to unify it, the basalt precipice is opened 20 metres in the height. The opening in the ground establishes the main entrance of the museum. The visitor sees his way interrupted by the fault of basalt. Then he can either pursue its way on the site (by walking on a footbridge) or answer at invitation of the basalt and come down until the “nef” (h=27m) before entering in the indoor exhibition.
Considered as a main element to observe, smell and touch the basalt is, here, staged thanks to the balconies of the building A and the various projections which are made on it. It is not only a joint or a sluggish “object” but becomes a living part of the museum and even of the site whose the access is not limited.
To maintain the public status of the fault is very important because it allows so well to offer it to the visitors of the museum and to the simple walkers on the site of Jeongok ri, which presents a big variety of activities.
A landmark
The situation of the museum presents the particularity to be in the middle of a complex of activities: prehistoric park, outdoor exhibition (excavation site), amusement park, and history-culture village.
The “nef” allows the entrance to the low museum (building A, h=27m), to reach us the “caves” of exhibition, and in the high museum (building B, h=61.8m). Once taken out of ground, the visitor reaches the continuation of the exhibition, through the basalt (by way of a glazed elevator), to arrive at the “mark”.
Indeed, the building B is positioned such a mark in the sky, to give a “guide” to the walkers. And it offers to them impregnable points of view on the whole site (the “nef” and the basalt which it overhangs, and the river Hantan without forgetting the prehistoric park and the outdoor exhibition).
The pedestrian streams
The desire to not spoil the site joins the one to facilitate the access of the site. So the pedestrian road which goes over the fault of basalt to irrigate the site according to the North-south axis is preserved. Moreover we add an East-west progress (at the same time as the “nef “), by way of the long gallery through the building B. In this way the museum is also a means to circulate on the entier domain of Jeongok-ri.
