The project is an excavation as the archaeological ones, a cut as a fracture between two clods of earth, which leads to discovery and revelation. The archaeological excavation highlights the key signs of the human existence. The museum wants to reveal the values of the matter and of the light, which transcend time limits.

The presence of the basaltic deposit is the starting point of our project approach. As in a continuous flow of transformations, the museum become, firstly, a basaltic cave and than a museum-container of handaxes (name of the stones used by men as primordial cutting instruments). The excavated rock is brought out for drawing the park’s paths and the great passage that leads to the different museums’ areas.

The project is composed by a set of objects, like the earth cut that reaches the height of +40.00, who keeps the same height, both for the external and for the inner spaces. The inner cave draws the expositive space in different section. The executive and administration areas and the stores, and the external volumes are covered with the extracted rock.

The relation between the external area and the inner ones is made by elements like: the openings that reach the meadow above, the strict and higher excavation leaved under the open sky and the volumes that come out from the natural conformation of the ground. The cavities reach the external area and depending on the atmosphere conditions, they will become zenith lights’ wells or lights’ spreaders along the sides, drums for the drawing rain or for the fury of the wind.

Inside the space is exalted by the light that is the principle element and, moreover it wants to underline the dualism lightness-darkness. The first one represents the source, which reflecting on the second one could exalt it and drawing the spaces in a clear and severe way. Inside, the impression is leaved to the conformation of the excavations and to the nude walls, which pass on cold sensations. While the external sounds come in amplified and distorted, leaving a stronger introspective sensation.
