The National Museum of Australia (MOA) and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS)-presented as a gift to the nation from the Commonwealth Government to commemorate the centenary of Federation - opened in March 2001. The highly visible Acton Peninsula site, previously occupied by Canberra Hospital, provides picturesque views across Lake Burley Griffin to Canberra's hills and ranges and is constrained by its shape, size, access and cultural heritage elements.

After traversing the Museum and edging the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Studies, the Uluru Axis heads towards Black Mountain
