PLOWING THE LAND: NORDHAVNEN
THE CITY
Copenhagen acquiring a major and consequential trade harbour of the “North”, happens to be one the most pecouinus and developed cities in Europe. In the domain of science and world of business, due to a concatenation held in 2008, Copenhagen is listed in Europe’s most livable cities and was launched in a list of cities embracing the best designs. Development plans for Copenhagen’s future are based on these approaches; scenarios are highlighted not only by preserving city’s horizontal identity, topography and highly qualified environmental standards, but also-in terms of developments evolved from creative economies- by supporting trade & business activities.
The “finger plan” plays a major role in Kopenhagen’s macro scale urban development strategies. Considering the finger plan, Nordhavnen as an important focal point in the city, provides an employment and housing potential for population of 40.000 that is essential in terms of urban development. Its connection with the “centrum” and location by the sea, provides an advantage in designing the area as a living space. The requirements for the area mentioned regulation programme, will both serve the new development area and will make a contribution to Copenhagen’s identity as a city.
CONCEPTUAL INPUTS Nordhavnen project concept is formed on four determining headings
1-The Physical, Social And Cultural Asset Features Of The Area: Due to industrial development and the impact of modernism on the new harbour formation, Nordhavnen, as a late 19th century and early 20th century urban-component, has maintained Copenhagen through functions such as maritime affreightments and harbour related activities. These characteristics of the asset structure are fundamental considering the new design strategy. Nordhavnen, an inlayed/stuffed area of 200 hectares articulated to the mainland, Copenhagen, has a considerable bond through Innerhaven-a THRESHOLD area providing a connection not only in physical dimension but also in social and cultural dimensions. Nordhavnen as a peripherical area close to the center, conveys not only a compensation need of housing for population of 40000, but also by using mixed-use concept, it should provide a sustainable living space for the users (inhabitants and outcomers) in economical, social and cultural dimensions; on the whole, should provide the criteria of an ecological approach which take all the living organisms’ actuality into account.
